DEWA concludes its participation in 3rd Internet of Things World Forum

Dubai, UAE, 9 December 2015: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) participated in the 3rd Internet of Things World Forum (IoTWF 2015), held in Dubai under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, in cooperation with Cisco. IoTWF was held from 6-8 December 2015 in Dubai World Trade Centre. A large number of government leaders and innovators representing different industries around the world took part in the forum. Participants were from the transportation, oil and gas, service, healthcare, sports, entertainment, education, retail, and government sectors.

Today, there are about 14 billion objects (things) connected to the Internet. They are the basis for the Internet of Everything era, which will significantly change the business world by means of smart networks that connect individuals, operations, data, and objects. Dubai has been selected to host the third Forum, following the second forum in Chicago, to build upon the achievements in infrastructure and system-wide business process solutions, to improve the lives of people.

“DEWA’s participation in the forum supports the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is to make Dubai the smartest city in the world. To support this vision, DEWA has launched three smart initiatives. These include Shams Dubai, to encourage building owners to install photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity and connect them to DEWA’s grid, Smart Applications through Smart Meters and Grids, which enables using smarter electricity and water systems by using smart meters that provide additional services, and the Green Charger to build the infrastructure and electric vehicles charging stations in Dubai. These smart initiatives are part of DEWA’s ongoing efforts to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world. Dubai is building a smart grid that is the first network in the world to cover from generation, transmission, and distribution systems, to customers,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“Within the first phase, DEWA is currently installing 200,000 smart meters which will be operational in January 2016. Subsequently, more than one million smart meters will be installed by 2020 covering all of Dubai, and replacing all mechanical and electromechanical meters in the coming years. The smart meters project complements the smart grid project by DEWA to implement a number of technical features in electricity networks, using the latest SCADA systems, smart monitoring and control automation systems to provide electricity and water services to the highest standards of availability, efficiency and reliability,” added Al Tayer.

“DEWA contributes to building a smarter Dubai that uses integrated electronic data, connected with each other through IT systems and synchronised network using the Internet and Cloud Computing. This will contribute to organising the city’s work and management, and promote its infrastructure and services including education, healthcare, security, transportation, and utilities. Facilities will be more efficient and reliable with new technologies and sensors in all major and vital locations in the Emirate.

Hosting the third Internet of Things World Forum in Dubai underlines its leading global position. It has become the centre of attention worldwide. IoTWF 2015 is the most prominent event of its kind in the world today. It attracts stakeholders and parties interested in keeping up to date with the latest developments related to the Internet of Things and smart applications.
