Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and art curator Jeffrey Deitch present an exhibition that celebrates the dialogue between fashion, music and photography.
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS (September 2015) – Tommy Hilfiger, which is owned by PVH Corp. [NYSE: PVH], is pleased to announce that American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger and curator Jeffrey Deitch have curated an exhibition entitled Rock Style, which will be on view from September 22 to October 30, 2015, at Sotheby’s S|2 gallery in London. The exhibition is inspired by the book Rock Style, originally authored by Tommy Hilfiger and music journalist Anthony Decurtis in 2000. Drawing on an assembly of brilliant, many rarely seen images from rock's best photographers, the book illustrates how fashion has embodied the soul of the rock generation.
The Rock Style exhibition celebrates great musicians who are style and musical innovators, and have influenced the look and attitude of millions worldwide. From The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Elvis Presley to Debbie Harry, the Ramones and Madonna, Rock Style features iconic images of musicians captured by the leading music photographers of their respective eras. The exhibition also includes six specially-commissioned paintings by American artist and activist Shepard Fairey, each of which portrays a pioneering figure in music and fashion.
Rock Style documents a remarkable period in contemporary culture when musicians were one of the primary sources of inspiration for fashion designers. “In many cases, musicians were more influential in the world of fashion than designers,” said Mr. Hilfiger. The icons featured in Rock Style invented their style themselves, rarely working with professional stylists. In some cases, as with Arturo Vega and the Ramones or with Malcolm McLaren and The Sex Pistols, style was an integral part of their band concept.
Many of the iconic photographs in Rock Style now resonate not only as documentation of the 20th century’s great musicians and historical performances, but stand out as art pieces themselves. These images have become part of both art and cultural history, and have been influential in defining our culture’s collective memory.
Musicians featured in the exhibition include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Diana Ross, Madonna, Elvis Presley, Lenny Kravitz, Janis Joplin, Deborah Harry, Ramones, The Sex Pistols and Little Richard. Photographers include Roberta Bayley, Janette Beckman, Bruce Davidson, Terence Donovan, James Fortune, Bob Gruen, David Hurn, Elliott Landy, Gered Mankowitz, Kevin Mazur, Ralph Morse, Terry O’Neill, Neal Preston, Mick Rock, Ethan Russell, Jerry Schatzberg, Gene Shaw, Alfred Wertheimer and Baron Wolman. Shepard Fairey has created specially-commissioned portraits of David Bowie, George Harrison, Deborah Harry, Jimi Hendrix, Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious.
