Dubai-UAE: 05 October 2013 – The Global Cardboard Challenge took place today at the Change Initiative Store in Dubai, from 10am to 2pm. The event saw over 100 visitors attending and enjoying, while displaying kids artistic talents and teamwork.
Organised by Mom Souq, the competition provided a safe and fun environment for children to be creative. Children used all sorts of reusable items such as cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, cans, and old toys to bring their imagination to life.
Some of the items created by kids included an entire city with buildings, a princes castle, a bowling alley, camera, batmobile, garbage disposal truck, an arcade game in the shape of a robot, headphones, photo albums, and many more items made out of cardboard and other recyclable materials.
Mona Tavassoli, Founder, Mom Souq, said: “The goal of this challenge is not only to help kids build what they can imagine, but to also encourage them to imagine the world they can build. When we decided to bring the Cardboard Challenge to UAE, we were aware of the potential that the event has in terms of bringing families together and providing kids with a platform to unleash their creativity. However, we never imagined that it would grow to be such a great event in such a short period of time. We are thrilled at the turnout this year, and are proud to be a part of a global and innovative initiative.”
Mady Soltani, mother of Sara Soltani from Jabel Ali Primary School, said: “In Sara's school they had a project where they asked kids to make things out of recycled materials. Sara found it really exciting and interesting to use different materials to make toys. She plays with these toys all the time and this challenge has given me a chance to spend more time with her doing something innovative, so it is an amazing experience. For the Cardboard Challenge today she has made a castle. She is into princesses and wanted to make a big castle but we decided to start with something small, and maybe next time we can build a big princess castle.”
Shamma and Alia, kids participating at the event, said: “We have made a game for this cardboard challenge in the shape of a robot with flashing lights. My aunt and uncle helped us with the circuit so that the eyes light up. You have to put a ball through the holes made on the robot. We never knew how lights work but when we were making this game, my aunt taught us everything about power and how energy is required for something like this. We want to show this to everyone and then go and play with the batmobile and do some painting.”
The Global Cardboard Challenge is an initiative launched by the Imagination Foundation that brings communities together to celebrate the creativity and imagination of children around the world.
Being one of the 270 global cardboard challenge events held across 70 countries this year, Mom Souq organized the Cardboard Challenge for the second time in Dubai, UAE, bringing more than triple the number of participants as opposed to last year. This year the Global Cardboard Challenge had the goal of engaging 1 million kids in 70 countries to express themselves creatively.
