27 March 2025; Ras Al Khaimah, UAE – As part of its RAK Biggest Weight Loss Challenge, RAK Hospital reinforced its commitment to public health by hosting an educative webinar on “The Role of Exercise in Obesity Management”. Led by Dr. Madhurima Deshmukh, a Lifestyle Coach with Arabian Wellness and Lifestyle Management, a division of RAK Hospital, the session equipped participants with practical insights on sustainable weight management through exercise.
With lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and heart ailments on the rise, obesity has emerged as a significant health concern. More than just a cosmetic issue, obesity is a chronic condition that impacts overall well-being and demands a comprehensive approach to management. The RAK Biggest Weight Loss Challenge is designed to address these concerns, offering expert guidance, structured programs, and motivation to help individuals achieve their health goals.
Obesity results from excessive fat accumulation in the body due to a combination of factors including poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, metabolic disorders, and mental stress. Managing obesity effectively requires a multi-faceted approach that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, lifestyle modifications, and, when necessary, medical interventions. Among these, exercise plays a crucial role by boosting metabolism, burning fat, and improving overall fitness, while also helping to maintain weight loss in the long run. A daily one-hour workout is recommended for optimal results.
Engaging in regular physical activity offers numerous benefits, such as reducing body fat, strengthening muscles, enhancing bone density, improving blood circulation, lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and promoting better sleep. Additionally, exercise releases endorphins, known as "happy hormones," which help alleviate stress and enhance mood. A well-rounded workout plan should incorporate cardio exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming to improve stamina; strength training such as bodyweight exercises or light weightlifting to build muscle and boost metabolism; and flexibility training, including stretching and yoga, to enhance movement efficiency and prevent injuries.
For individuals struggling with obesity, having a structured and personalized fitness plan can make a significant difference. Dr. Deshmukh provided expert recommendations on safe and effective workouts tailored to different fitness levels. To maintain consistency, individuals should choose activities they enjoy, track progress, set achievable goals, and incorporate exercise into their daily routine.
While exercise is beneficial, it is important for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or joint issues to consult a doctor before starting a new fitness regimen. Dr. Deshmukh guided the participants on how to engage in physical activity safely and effectively, ensuring that participants make informed decisions about their health.
