Rare case has seen only 120 nasal chondromas reported to date globally
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 31 March, 2018: 43-year-old, Xavier, was treated by Surgeons at Zulekha Hospital in Dubai for a very rare case of chondroma, a benign cartilaginous tumour of the nose.
This case is so rare that globally the number of cases of nasal chondroma has not exceeded 120.
The patient was originally diagnosed with a benign tumour arising from the nasal cartilage. After a successful operation, the entire tumour was removed, allowing the patient to regain a normal nasal function.
Ahead of the patient’s hospital admission, the patient had a history of nasal blockages and nasal discharge for a period of six months.
Based on CT scans taken of Xavier’s nasal sinuses, it became clear that the patient had a mass growing within his nostril that was destroying part of the nasal septum.
Not only this but the mass was moving and extending into the opposite nasal cavity.
Due to the complexity of this case Xavier was referred to Dr. Manoj, Specialist (Ear, Nose & Throat) ENT Surgeon at Zulekha Hospital.
Following an evaluation of the patient’s case, Dr. Manoj called for a biopsy of the infection, which was analysed by Zulekha Hospital’s pathology department and sent over for further expert evaluation.
After analysing the results, the patient was diagnosed with a benign chondroma of the nose, an extremely rare cartilaginous tumour that puts pressure on the nasal bones.
As the lesion was so extensive, it took the doctor and the medical team some time to determine the most suitable method for extraction of the tumour.
It was decided that an endoscopic approach, where an endoscope is inserted through the nose, would provide the best results for the patient.
Two days prior to the surgery, the patient was subjected to Higher Injectable Antibiotics and IV steroids for managing the infection and regressing the tumour size.
The team of Surgeons included Dr. Manoj, Dr. Naveen Gupta, Specialist ENT Surgeon and Dr. Masood Ansari, Consultant ENT Surgeon who took part in performing the endoscopic sinus surgery to remove the lesion.
The patient was kept stable with the help of Dr. Dhananjay Sanjekar, Specialist Anaesthetist. The entirety of the tumour was removed so that none of the growth tissue was remaining.
Dr. Manoj said: “Very few cases of nasal chondroma have been reported globally to date, so this surgery is of particular significance.
I would like to thank Dr. Naveen and Dr. Masood for their great help provided to me during the time of surgery, which meant that the patient was able to be discharged after two days and was able to return to work after the 7th post-operative day.”
Expressing his thankfulness to the hospital team, Xavier said: “I have been relieved from a very stressful situation with this surgery when I could not sleep at night and that disturbed my daily schedule.
After having visited multiple hospitals, the team at Zulekha Hospital was able to arrive at the right diagnosis and advised the surgery for me.
Many thanks to the team of doctors who worked together for my treatment.”
Xavier is now leading a happier life following his surgery and has regained regular nasal functioning and displays no nasal abnormalities.
The patient was advised to receive post-operative radiation and to attend regular follow-ups as the recurrence rate is high for tumours arising from cartilaginous tissue.
