The Role
A CNC Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to manufacture precision components according to engineering drawings and specifications. The role involves material preparation, machine operation, quality verification, and routine machine care while ensuring compliance with safety and production standards. CNC Operators play a key role in delivering consistent, high-quality machined parts in manufacturing and industrial environments. Duties and Responsibilities • Set up and operate CNC milling, turning, or drilling machines to produce precision components. • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and CAD models. • Load raw materials and ensure correct clamping and alignment before machining. • Input or adjust machine parameters such as feeds, speeds, offsets, and tool selections. • Monitor machining processes and make minor adjustments to maintain accuracy and efficiency. • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, dial gauges). • Maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish within specified tolerances. • Replace worn tools and manage tool offsets during production. • Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance. • Identify machining defects or machine abnormalities and report issues to supervisors. • Record production data, tooling usage, and inspection results. • Follow workplace safety procedures, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards.

Requirements
Experience: • Typically 3–5 years of experience in CNC machining or precision manufacturing environments. • Experience with CNC milling or turning preferred (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, etc.). • Exposure to production or job-shop environments is advantageous. Skills and Qualifications Education • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Technology, or related field. • Technical certifications in CNC machining are highly desirable (TVET, NVQ, or equivalent). Technical Competencies • Strong understanding of CNC machine operations and machining principles. • Basic knowledge of G-code and M-code interpretation. • Familiarity with machining processes: milling, turning, drilling, and tapping. • Ability to read engineering drawings and geometric tolerances. • Knowledge of cutting tools, tool wear, and machining parameters. Core Skills • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings and tolerances. • Metrology: Skilled in using measuring tools and inspection techniques. • Mathematical Skills: Basic calculations for feeds, speeds, and tolerances. • Mechanical Aptitude: Understanding of machine components and tooling. • Problem Solving: Ability to identify and resolve minor machining issues. • Attention to Detail: Maintain accuracy and consistency in production. Safety and Professional Attributes • Strong awareness of machine safety and risk controls. • Compliance with PPE and lockout/tagout procedures where applicable. • Good documentation and reporting discipline. • Ability to work independently and within a production team. • Commitment to continuous improvement and quality standards. Preferred (Optional for Advanced Roles) • Familiarity with CAM software (Fusion 360, MasterCAM, SolidWorks CAM). • Experience with CNC simulation or setup sheets. • Knowledge of ISO quality systems or lean manufacturing.
