Wednesday 2 October - The first-ever Inter-Clubs Ladies Doubles League, a competition for female tennis players to pit their doubles match-play skills against others in Dubai, kicked off yesterday at the Meydan Tennis Academy, Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Madinat Jumeirah.

The Inter-Clubs Ladies Doubles League is a social-competitive team competition between tennis clubs in Dubai, in which 1 team from PBI-Jumeirah Beach Hotel, PBI-Madinat Jumeirah, and Clark Francis Tennis are represented, while Tennis 360 is represented by 3 teams. The teams will be competing for the honour of bringing home the championship trophy for this inaugural league.

Each team comprises of 4 players with 2 reserves, and each club will host 1 tie on Home and Away basis for 10 weeks of play.

The league was initiated by Tennis 360 with the collaboration of Peter Burwash International (PBI) and Clark Francis Tennis. It runs from October 1 to December 10, with matches played on Tuesdays from 8:30- 10:30am at the Meydan Tennis Academy, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah and the Aviation Club.

At yesterday's opening games at Meydan, friendship was put aside as Gwen Sproule and Nicky Watts from Tennis 361 defeated Tennis 362's Beverly Constantinou and Gunjan Pradhan 6-3, 6-3, while Tennis 361's Amber Trbonja and Dina Hopps overcame Tennis 362's Betsy Barnwell and Irene Pinal 6-4, 7-5.

Over at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, the more-experienced PBI-JBH pair of Zeina Abou Joude and Sarah Takesh defeated Tennis 363's first-time partners Reika Malakouti and Em Howle 6-2, 6-0, while Annie Silva and Lisa O'Sullivan of PBI-JBH beat Tennis 363's Angelique Bartstra and Marie-Christine Aller 6-3, 6-1.

'We may have lost our first game, but we certainly had a lot of fun. I usually play singles and have just only discovered the fun in playing doubles. I really enjoy this social competitive environment and I look forward to the next game,' said Reika Malakouti from Tennis 363.

At Madinat Jumeirah, the ladies from Clark Francis proved too strong for their PBI-Madinat Jumeirah opponents, with the pairing of Nichola Williams and Pam Weisson beating Stephanie Danial and Caroline Rossi 6-2, 6-2, while Zoe and Becky Foster defeated Roth Tram-Anh and Theresa Starta 6-1, 6-1.

Actively involved in the Dubai tennis scene for over 7 years, Gwen Sproule, owner and Business Development Director for Tennis 360, knows that the development of tennis in the UAE isn't just down to one person or one club.

“There are plenty of tennis academies and clubs in Dubai, with each one organising their own activities. We must strive for a collaborative environment and work together towards the common goal of promoting tennis to all ages and abilities in the UAE,” said Gwen.

The championship finals for the Inter-Clubs Ladies Doubles League will be held on Tuesday, Dec 17 at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and will feature an exhibition Pro Doubles match, buffet lunch and awards ceremony.

Spectators are welcomed.
