ABCs of Buying a Car
One of the greatest inventions of all times - the wheel, made very modest progress in the first 5,000 years of its history. Just a mere 200 years ago, however, a Jesuit missionary constructed the first scale model of a steam-driven carriage to trigger a series of changes that was to rewrite the very pace of life. The car is the city dweller's essential prop but buying one is no easy matter. Auto expert, Sajjad Vazir takes us through some basic homework that must be done before purchasing a car.

Cars are no longer a luxury. Hectic lifestyles, tight schedules, scarcity of Public Transport - all make it imperative to own some kind of conveyance.

With the advent of technology, the shape and sizes of vehicles have changed tremendously. Wide ranges of models are available that cater to individual needs, style, and driving conditions.

All this has put potential buyers in a dilemma with questions like;
How much to spend? Where to buy? What to buy? What to look for in a new or used car? Etc.

Though difficult, some amount of planning can make life easier. Answering a few basic questions would go a long way in the selection of a reliable vehicle best suited to your needs and budget.

For Example; What is the primary usage of the vehicle - home, office, school, second car, etc?
- What is best suited to the above requirement? It can be a saloon, coupe, estate, or a 4x4 vehicle.
- Should it be brand new or used?
- How much are you willing to spend?
- Will you spend cash or look for bank financing?

Once all this information is handy, you are better placed to hunt for a car. If you have opted for a brand new car then your job is facilitated as, comprehensive data is available from the dealers / agents. Your best bet is to look for bargains.

Dealers offer various schemes, warranty, buy back plans, etc. All this information is easily available for you to analyze, compare, and decide.

Now about buying a used vehicle - things are not that straightforward and information flows in bits and pieces for you to assemble and interpret.

First of all, what should you look for before buying a used vehicle? Answer again is relative since a used car needs to be studied in detail. The logbook or maintenance history will give some clues. In addition, the person using the car earlier may tell you a good deal; most important is the appearance and physical condition of the car, which reveals a lot.

This is where expertise and experience comes in.

You can also get a proper vehicle checkup report from the computerized checkup shops, or from “TASJEEL” points at EPPCO fuel stations. They have qualified staff and proper equipment to give a fair assessment of the condition. All said and done, a proper check with your regular maintenance workshop can reveal whatever remains untold.

Imported used cars are yet another category of vehicles available in the market. Mostly from Europe, USA, and Japan, these units have better accessories and body condition than the local used vehicles.
Reasons for this are many – viz; running conditions, weather, maintenance standards, quality of lubricants, etc. in the country of first use.

Since these units are not used here, service history is mostly not available, thus condition and performance varies from car to car. Hence, thorough check up is essential before purchase of such cars.

Experience with imported cars has proved that these are better buys; although a little expensive, these cars are worth their price. If bought from a reliable dealer, with service backup you will not regret your purchase.

Once again, the bottom line is “if you have done your home work properly you will not only clinch a good deal but also save your valuable time.

Happy hunting and Good Luck.
