Diamonds |
Owning a diamond has always meant possession of something of great beauty and lasting value. Diamonds are certainly the most precious of all nature's creations. Their fiery brilliance captures our hearts as the eternal symbol of love.
But if you're like most people, you probably know very little about the technicalities of diamonds.
The Diamond Story
Diamond is the name given to the crystalized form of the element Carbon. Diamonds are formed under extreme heat and pressure at our Earth's core. They traveled to the surface through volcanic pipelines known as kimberlite. Due to their unique physical properties diamonds have been sought after by kings and nobles down the ages.
The value of a diamond
The value of a diamond is determined by its exact quality as defined by the 4C's:
Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat-Weight.
Colour
The most desirable diamonds are colorless. The best color is D, which is almost clear white; the color scale descends from there through the alphabet toward Z, moving further away from colorless toward yellow or brown tints.
Clarity
Diamonds have small imperfections in them known as inclusions; the fewer inclusions, the more valuable the stone. IF or Internally Flawless Diamonds are both expensive and rare. The clarity gradings start from IF to VVS then VS and Si and Iower too. All gradings are done on a 10 times magnification. No inclusions till the Si grade are visible to the naked eye.
Carat Weight
This is the size of the stone. The word carat comes from the carob seeds that were used to balance scales in ancient times. On a comparative scale to grams it is interesting to note that 5 carats equal 1 gram. Each carat is divided into 100 points. 1/2 carat stone could also be referred to as 50 points. ¬ carat stone shall be addressed as a 25 pointer.
Cut
Refers to the symmetry and proportions of the stone; it is what gives the diamond its sparkle. There are many diamond shapes to choose from. Round, Oval, Pear, Princess, Marquise, to name a few. Whatever shape and quality you prefer, a Laboratory Report or what is often referred to as a "Certified Diamond" not only buys you a rare and precious gem it also gives you the complete specifications with regards to the four C's.
What makes diamonds so specials?
1. Diamonds are the oldest gemstone known to mankind
2. Diamonds are the hardest substances known to man. They are 2000 times harder that rubies or sapphires and 3000 times harder than man made imitations such as cubic zirconia.
3. Diamonds are rare and difficult to find.
4. The larger the size the rarer the stone. For example a three carat diamond can cost seven times the price of a one carat of equal quality and color. So the larger the stone greater it's cost.
Diamond Jewellery:
Trends, latest designs, classics, personal choice, unusual, are some of the basis of how a designer creates a pc and then the manufacturer goes about creating it in gold and diamonds. From a customer's point of view, just as a designer, one has a fair idea of what one wants and then another important point involves the price element which plays an equally important role in the selection.
Whatever the selection, jewellery purchase finally boils down to first choosing a combination of a good Jeweller and the right design and of course the price. One more element can contribute to the decision making and that is that most reputed jewellers now give a guarantee or authenticity certificate with any purchase of Diamond jewellery. Most also offer a 'NO FUSS' 100% upgrade policy to their customers. So everytime you set out to buy diamond jewellery, let the seller guide you through the Four C's and their guarantee as well as their upgrade policies.
Nothing can ever match the magic of diamonds, each diamond is unique in a way. No words can explain the sheer fire of their brilliance, no gift is ever so cherished than that of diamonds. No wonder they are a girl's best friend.
