Proper storage helps reduce waste, which is estimated to be 1.3 million tonnes of food wastage globally per year.
Storing food in your refrigerator correctly can help to preserve it for longer, prevent wastage and in turn reduce costly grocery bills. Nearly 38 per cent of food is wasted every day in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi, 33 per cent of the waste generated each year comprises of food*. Maintaining an efficiently organized fridge provides greater convenience in your kitchen and a cleaner, safer environment for your food. To help make the most of your refrigerator, Samsung has compiled some helpful tips for effective use and storage.
1. Organise by Food Type – Arranging the products in your fridge by food type enables you to find products easily which as well as providing greater convenience, reduces energy usage when the door is open. Keep your raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood separate from other food in the refrigerator, putting them in separate containers (or ensuring they are wrapped securely).
The top shelf of your refrigerator is the warmest section and suitable for pre-prepared foods such as yogurt. The coldest part of the fridge is at the bottom making it ideal to store meat, fish and poultry. Placing these items at the bottom also means that there's less risk of juices dripping.
Store fruit and vegetables in the dedicated salad drawer and use humidity controls to retain moisture which will help certain vegetables, such as lettuce, cucumber, cauliflower, broccoli, beans, carrots and leafy veg, last longer.
2. Check the Temperature - Keep your fridge temperature at 5°C or below to stop food from going off and to prevent the spread of bacteria.
3. Keep Milk Cool – Most people keep milk in their refrigerator door however when it is stored in this section of the refrigerator, it is warmed by the ambient air of the kitchen when the door is opened. To stop your milk turning sour, store it in the main section of the refrigerator and place condiments and canned drinks in the refrigerator door instead.
4. Cover Up – Keep all foods covered or in containers to preserve them for longer and prevent cross-contamination (which is especially important for meat, fish and poultry goods).
5. Keep it Clean – Keep your fridge healthy and hygienic by cleaning it once a week if possible. Wipe away the inevitable spills and throw out spoiled food to ensure you're not consuming any out of date food. For a more thorough clean, start by removing all items along with the glass shelves and once the shelves have thawed out, wash them in hot water (enabling the shelves to thaw stops the glass from cracking). Wipe any fixed compartments with a cloth soaked in cold water and gentle detergent.
