Sensitive Skin Care Tips For Summer
Summer sun, humidity, and heat can translate into redness, discomfort and irritation for sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is a subtype of skin that can present itself along with any skin type (oily, dry and combination). Sensitive skin patches can affect certain parts of skin or whole body and they can range in severity from mild, moderate to severe. Follow these simple adjustments in your skincare routine and lifestyle this summer to keep your skin calm and irritation free.
1. Skin irritations start when the barrier function of our skin is compromised. To keep your skin protected and soothed, minimize your exposure to moisture depleting elements like: low humidity, harsh winds, dry heat, sun, long hot baths and stripping soaps loaded with harsh detergents as they rob skin of its natural oils. Switch to soap free gentle cleansers with ingredients like oatmeal and aloe. If you suffer from skin irritation with patches of strong itching, redness or burning visit a dermatologist as soon a possible.
2. During the summer months, any skin type can become dull because of excess sebum and sweat overload, but with sensitive skin this translates into more irritation. To keep skin exasperation under control, follow a gentle skincare routine that includes mild cleansers, toners and moisturizers that are formulated specifically to calm sensitive skin. Avoid products with retinoids, fruit acids, alcohol, antibacterial, and deodorant ingredients. As a general rule if you have sensitive skin, look for skincare products and makeup that are especially formulated for sensitive skin and labeled hypoallergenic and fragrance free.
3. To alleviate the discomfort and irritation that usually accompanies sensitive skin, moisturize with lightweight serums or lotions multiple times a day to make sure your skin barrier stays intact.
4. UV rays can be really damaging for sensitive skin, wear a SPF50+ sunscreen suitable for sensitive and intolerant skin while being outdoors.
5. If your skin is sensitive wear soft, lightweight and natural fabrics like cotton during the hot weather. A very common complain during hot summer months is irritation in the sensitive groin area, especially during the menstruation period. Pick sanitary napkins that are cotton based. “Always Cottony” sanitary napkins are perfect for delicate skin, they come not only in cotton feel, but they are also infused with moisturizing lotion to protect and nourish the sensitive skin.
