GAC Pindar Ambassador shares insights with the GAC Oman crew ahead of latest challenge
Muscat, March 10, 2014 – Quadriplegic sailor Hilary Lister has shared her experiences with the GAC Oman team ahead of her latest challenge, setting off today.
Hilary, who has been a GAC Pindar ambassador for the past decade, will, along with Omani sailor Nashwa Al Kindi, make a bid to set two new trans-ocean records on a sailing expedition from Mumbai, India to Oman. A successful conclusion to the expedition will make Lister the first severely paralysed woman to complete the voyage, while Al Kindi will be the first Arab woman sailor to do so.
In her address to the management and staff of GAC Oman ahead of the challenge, Hilary shared her insights on motivation and how self-understanding can help us conquer our fears and lead effectively through change.
She said: “When you spend 24 hours a day confined to a wheelchair, or a bed, sailing is the ultimate freedom. I have the wind in my hair and the spray in my face. I'm alive.” Hilary first made it to the record books in 2005, when she sailed the English Channel, and again in 2009 when she sailed solo around Britain.
