- More than 700 delegates and nuclear energy experts attended the second day of the IAEA organized conference in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – 31 October 2017: Challenges in developing nuclear energy infrastructure, facilitating international cooperation, and the safety and reliability of nuclear energy were the key topics discussed during the second day of the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century, currently being held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). More than 700 delegates and nuclear energy leaders attending the Conference participated in two panel sessions and a jointly organized IAEA/NEA side event on facilitating international cooperation.
The first panel session opened with a keynote address by Mr. Mzubanzi Bismark Tyobeka, CEO, National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), South Africa, who highlighted the challenges in developing strong institutional infrastructure for nuclear power including financing, stakeholder involvement and public acceptance. The session's panelists included Mr. Xavier Ursat, Group Senior Executive Vice President, New Nuclear Projects and Engineering, EDF Group, France, Mr. Kirill Komarov, First Deputy CEO for Corporate Development and International Business, ROSATOM, Russian Federation, Mr. Nalinish Nagaich, Director for Human Resources, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), India, Mr. Muhammad Naeem, Chairman, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Pakistan, and The Honorable Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister, Prime Minister's Department, Malaysia.
The second panel session opened with a keynote address by Mr. Petteri Tiippana, Director General, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), Finland, who spoke about how to ensure safety, security and non-proliferation in dealing with challenges such as the expansion of nuclear power in the world, long term operation of nuclear power plants and a variety of innovative technologies. The session's panelists included Mr. Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada, Mr. Shunsuke Kondo, Former Chairman, Japan Atomic Energy Commission and President, Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan (NUMO), Japan, Mr. Jose Reyes, Chief Technology Officer, NuScale Power, United States, and Mr. Noh Baek-sik, Executive Vice President, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co Ltd. (KHNP), Republic of Korea.
Tomorrow, the final day of the Conference, will see attendees discuss innovations and advances in nuclear technologies as a part of the Conference's final panel session. The session is to be opened with a keynote by Mr. Francois Gauche, Director, Nuclear Energy Division, Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), France, who will highlight new developments in various areas related to nuclear power such as small modular reactors for near term deployment and open and closed fuel cycles.
The final session's panelists will include Mr. Osvaldo Calzetta-Larrieu, Chairman, National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), Argentina, Mr. Zhang Zuoyi, Director, Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INET), Tsinghua University, China, Mr. Viacheslav Pershukov, Special Representative for International and Scientific Projects, ROSATOM, Russian Federation, and Mr. Mika Pohjonen, Managing Director, Posiva Solutions Oy, Finland.
Following the final panel session, a special presentation on the role of women in the nuclear industry will be held by Her Excellency, Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Vice Chairwoman, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation Board of Directors, and President of Zayed University, United Arab Emirates.
Finally, His Excellency, Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the IAEA and President of the Conference, will make a concluding statement, wrapping up the Conference agenda and summarizing the many successes of the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century.
