Our fast paced lives have been vastly improved with the use of home appliances. However, these resources are either overused or not used enough, both which can affect their efficiency. Here are a few simple tips to ensure your appliances are easily maintained; this will also ensure better efficiency and a longer life.
- Check the ESMA Label: Home appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines consume a lot of electricity. To address this and build a sustainable environment, UAE is focused on promoting the use of energy efficient products. The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) test and certify appliances on various parameters including energy efficiency. The ESMA Label is mandatory on appliances being sold in UAE and is to be visibly displayed on each product. Check for the ESMA Label while making a purchase and compare capacities, power consumption and star rating before making a purchase decision.
- Is your Ref closed? : Refrigerators are on 24/7 and are accessed all day long for various reasons. With regular and continuous activity there's always a chance of damage due to wear and tear. To ensure that the refrigerator works efficiently, check for air leaks caused by tears or gaps in the door seals (gaskets). A small leak can put additional pressure on the appliance to maintain the proper temperature, resulting in higher electricity consumption.
- Protect your Ref from high heat sources: When designing / moving into your kitchen, try to keep your refrigerator away from appliances like cooking range, oven, dishwasher, or any other appliance that may emit high levels of heat. It's also wise to keep it out of prolonged amounts of direct sunlight in order to prevent it from working in overdrive.
- Clean Blend the Blender: A quick and simple way to clean the blender is to fill the blender with some hot water, add some drops of dish washing liquid and blend for a few seconds. Rinse the blender thoroughly and then allow it to air dry.
- Micro the Lemon: Mix some lemon juice and water in a microwavable bowl, set the timer for five minutes. The citrus-infused steam produced by the water will absorb all the odors. Once the microwave is off and cool, just wipe down the inside.
- Clean the Pocket: Washing machines tend to have a buildup of detergent and odors due to the residue that collects in the detergent pocket. Regularly clean the dispenser to remove detergent / softener residue so clothes come out fresh. Use the recommended detergent for front and top loading machines, as it can affect the efficiency and performance due to the varying amount of suds produced by the detergent.
- Clean the Dishwasher: Avoid the build-up of debris in a dishwasher by running it regularly. Using a dishwasher frequently keeps debris from settling in the bottom of the appliance. Also, clean the filter regularly to avoid clogging and odours from trapped food.
