  • Innovations support Dubai Government's Smart City agenda

Dubai, UAE, October 3, 2016:    For the very first time, Philips Lighting will be displaying  its energy efficient LED and connected lighting systems at the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2016) that is taking place between 4 – 6 October, at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Philip Lighting's portfolio of solutions directly support Dubai's transformation towards becoming a world leading smart city and its sustainability goals, including the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy designed to reduce energy consumption by 30% by 2030. In UAE only, lighting accounts for 22 per cent of energy consumption and 6.8 per cent of CO2 emissions.

Paolo Cervini, Senior Vice President Philips Lighting, President Philips Lighting Middle East and Turkey said, “Philips Lighting is committed to forming strategic partnerships in both the public and private sector to drive world leading innovation with the aim of bringing energy efficient, value-rich connected lighting to cities, offices, retail and the home, ultimately enabling the smart cities of the future. By incorporating connected LED technology across these verticals we are delivering value that goes beyond illumination while boosting productivity, among other social and economic benefits.”

Rami Hajjar, General Manager Philips Lighting Middle East added, “Our partnership with Dubai Government dates back to 2013 when we signed our first MoU with Dubai Municipality. Our shared goals and vision for transforming Dubai into a smart city of the future have provided plenty of opportunities for us to collaborate as we have lent our expertise to the government in moving toward connected and energy efficient solutions. We look forward to showcasing our many solutions in the intelligent lighting sector to both private and public organizations at WETEX to help advance this agenda further.”

At the World Green Economic Summit that is taking place on 6 October on the sidelines of WETEX, Murali Sivaraman, Lighting Group Leader of Growth Markets at Philips Lighting, will be part of a plenary session entitled ‘Sustainability, Smart Technology & People' that will explore ways to combine inclusive growth with ‘smart' and ‘green', with a special focus on smart technologies leading to the era of Big Data, and best-practice examples. He will be joined by H.E Saeed Al Tayer, MD & CEO, DEWA; H.E Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General, Dubai Municipality; H.E Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman RTA; Steve Skadron, Mayor, City of Aspen and Xavier Joseph, CEO Middle East, Veolia.

At the exhibition, connected lighting systems, luminaires, app-based controls, and cloud-based solutions will be on display including those specific to sectors, as well as options designed for indoor and outdoor spaces. The outdoor solutions support RTA's plans to convert all conventional street lights to LED technology  by 2030 and reduce carbon footprint by more than 3,000 tons per annum.

Solutions on display at the Philips Lighting stand will include:

  • Philips CityTouch street lighting system utilizes Vodafone's world-leading machine-to-machine (M2M) network to connect individual light points, enabling authorities to monitor and manage lighting, check performance, identify faults and control lighting remotely.
  • Philips and Cisco's joint connected lighting for offices that utilizes Power over Ethernet (PoE) routes low-voltage electricity over the Ethernet cable of an office's IT network to power LED luminaires. Light levels can be controlled via a smartphone app, while building managers are provided data to maximize operational efficiency. Smartworld in Dubai is the first example to transform into this technology in Middle East.
  • Philips and Aisle411 have developed an LED-based indoor positioning system that employs ceiling mounted sensor-equipped luminaires, allowing customers to use a smartphone app to access location based services which guide them to selected items on their shopping list. aswaaq in Dubai is the first implementation in Middle East for this unique system.
  • With Luminous Carpets, Philips Lighting and Desso have integrated LED lighting into light transmissive carpets to provide a patented flooring solution for use in high-traffic environments. These programmable LED units can display information, show directions and even logos and newsfeed. When switched off, the solution is invisible.
  • Philips ActiveSite is a cloud-based connected lighting management platform that allows Philips Color Kinetics architectural LED lighting systems to be remotely monitored, maintained, and managed. Content, such as light shows, can be uploaded from anywhere in the world. Philips ActiveSite is also being used by iconic landmarks around the world including the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the Allianz Arena, home to FC Bayern.
  • Philips Lighting provides range of services that include:
    • Professional; which help customers to understand the project potential and estimate the feasibility, as well as to get a better insight into their current infrastructure
    • Lifecycle services; which protects customer's investment and ensures seamless operation for a longer period of time
    • Managed services; which includes Philips guaranteeing the final project outcome like energy savings and lighting levels as well as running operations of the lighting infrastructure

Philips will show on the example of CityTouch, ActiveSite and EnvisionManager systems (supporting road, architectural and indoor lighting respectively) how operation and maintenance of lighting systems is becoming more efficient and transparent. Besides benefits in operation and maintenance, Philips will highlight how data on the system and even building usage can be used to improve business operations and generate financial returns beyond energy and maintenance costs savings.

One of the first sound examples of a managed services ESCO projects in the region was refurbishment of DEWA power plants which Philips did together with Etihad. In the project Philips did the audit of the current lighting infrastructure.

Phase I of the project showed that lighting levels were significantly improved: instead of estimated 68% of savings, DEWA benefited from 75%, while lighting levels have been significantly improved, especially in the outdoor areas: street and area lighting.
