January 21, 2016, Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today hosted the second Steering Committee meeting of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a coalition of solar rich countries to promote the increased generation and deployment of solar energy. The meeting focused on next steps in advancing new solar technologies worldwide and was held during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), a global forum on sustainability.

“Solar power is one of the cleanest energy sources and is becoming far more cost-competitive than in years before,” said H.E. Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Permanent Representative to IRENA and Director of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). “Harnessing the sun for solar energy presents an opportunity for the global community to diversify energy sources and achieve a secure energy future.”

The coalition, launched during the Paris climate summit in December 2015, discussed ways to promote and mobilize funding toward solar energy projects, how to address research and development issues and best practices in technology transfer.

Also discussed during the meeting was the Alliance's work program for 2016 and its governance.

Representatives from several international organizations attended the meeting, notably the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), The World Bank Group and the United Nations.
