McDonald's UAE Announces New Environmental Initiative at Schools across the United Arab Emirates

Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to implement Planting a Greener Future

UAE, Dubai, 20 April 2014 - McDonald's UAE is pleased to announce the launch of an environmental initiative with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to plant 350 trees and convert sandpits to green fields for sports activities at seven schools across the seven Emirates.

Today's announcement of the Planting a Greener Future campaign will increase the amount of greenery in schools which will provide numerous benefits such as natural shade, storm water mitigation and the improvement of air quality through natural filtration. A total of 50 trees will be planted in each of the seven different schools during this campaign. The first two schools will be visited in May while the remaining five schools will be visited across the rest of the year.

Through this initiative, McDonald's UAE aims to raise awareness amongst students on the importance of environmental protection and conservation of resources by getting them directly involved in the planting process. It will be an educational journey during which they will learn about the suitable soil and irrigations system required for the different species of flora that can grow safely in the UAE climate.

Speaking of Planting a Greener Future, Mr. Rafic Fakih, Managing Director and Partner of McDonald's UAE said: “We have always been strong advocates of green initiatives and are pleased to be able to make a positive improvement at schools in the UAE. Besides the natural benefits of planting trees, the conversion of sandpits to green fields will encourage students to maintain an active lifestyle by allowing them to participate in a variety of sporting activities.  We are proud to be able to play a vital role in environmental initiatives that will benefit our community.”

Ms. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG said “It is our pleasure to have the support of McDonald's UAE on this project. This demonstrates their commitment to environmental responsibility and their desire to give back to the community. We look forward to sharing our enthusiasm with students across the UAE.”

McDonald's UAE has been a proud advocate of green initiatives led by EEG for several years and has participated in annual events such as the Can Collection campaign and the Clean Up UAE campaign.
