THE PANERAI CLASSIC YACHTS CHALLENGE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF PASSION

In 2014 Officine Panerai celebrates the 10th edition of the leading international classic sailing circuit: a decade of passion and unforgettable stories.

2014 marks the milestone 10th anniversary in the partnership between Officine Panerai and the world of classic sailing. Ten years of passion: for the sea, for beauty, for the history of every single one of the boats that has helped turn the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge into the leading international circuit for classic and vintage yachts.

This 10-year anniversary is a testament to Officine Panerai's long-term commitment to the promotion and preservation of the extraordinary cultural tradition and heritage embodied by the Grandes Dames of the Sea which, in some cases, have been casting their spell over anyone fortunate enough to witness them in spectacular action, for over a century. In line with its celebratory spirit, the 10th edition of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge will be the richest and most varied in the circuit's history. For the first time, the calendar spans 11 international regattas, most on the Mediterranean Circuit, encompassing Italian, French and Spanish rounds, and the North American Circuit, held entirely in New England. As per tradition, the season opens in April with the big Caribbean season-closing Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta which has now reached its 27th edition. In July, the fleet makes its way to Cowes on the Isle of Wight for the Panerai British Classic Week, before wrapping up the racing year in Cannes at the end of September.

Thousands of enthusiasts and hundreds of vintage and classic yachts are expected at the PCYC regattas where they will attempt to lay claim to the trophies currently held by the 2013 winners: Cambria (Big Boats), Leonore (Vintage) and Il Moro di Venezia (Classic) on the Mediterranean Circuit, and Black Watch on the North American one. One of the real stars of the 2014 season will be Eilean, the 1936 Bermudan ketch acquired and restored by Officine Panerai. She will be participating in the Mediterranean regattas as the ambassador for the haute horlogerie sports watch brand.

10 YEARS OF PASSION IN NUMBERS

10 The number of years Les Régates Royales de Cannes has been a part of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Mediterranean Circuit: it is the only regatta that has been part of the Officine Panerai-sponsored event since its very first edition. In second place, having participated on nine occasions, is Les Voiles d'Antibes, confirming the essential role played by the Côte d'Azur in the classic sailing world.

58 The average number of boats that has taken part in every single Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge event between 2005 and 2013.

69 The 69-metre Atlantic, the largest of the yachts to have taken part in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, is a steel-built replica of the three-masted gaff schooner that won the Kaiser's Cup in 1905 skippered by the legendary Charlie Barr, covering the 3,006 nautical miles between America and Britain in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. A record that was unbeaten until 1998.

89 The total number of regattas competed under the aegis of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge between 2005 and the end of the 2014 season. Of these, 48 were held in the Mediterranean, 27 in the United States, 9 in the Caribbean and 5 at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where the America's Cup was first raced in 1851.

124 The largest number of boats to take part in an individual round of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. This happened at the 2006 Vele d'Epoca di Imperia, which is always hugely popular with these Grandes Dames of the Sea because of its extraordinary maritime tradition.

615 The total number of boats entered in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge regattas in 2012 which remains the busiest season in the Circuit's entire history.

1884 The year of the launch of Victory, the oldest of the vintage yachts to have taken part in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge over the last 10 years. A gaff cutter built in Cornwall, she is based in Falmouth in England but has competed in several regattas in the Mediterranean in recent years.

1936 The year of the launch of Eilean, the Bermudan ketch acquired and restored by Officine Panerai. 1936 was also the year in which the Florentine haute horlogerie sports watch company created its first prototype watch, the Radiomir, for the Italian Navy's Special Forces.

EILEAN

Eilean and Officine Panerai: a fascinating story of fate and crossed paths

1936 was a year in which two sublime examples of two very different human crafts emerged. Both were born in very different parts of the world and completely unaware of each other's existence but still shared a common link: the sea. In 1936, the Florentine precision instrument and luminous sight-maker, Panerai, was commissioned by the Italian Navy to design and make its first prototype watch, the Radiomir, specifically for the latter's specialist sub aqua units. Contemporaneously, in the town of Fairlie in faroff Scotland, one of the greatest naval architects of all time, William Fife III, was putting the finishing touches to one of his final and most perfect creations, Eilean.

Despite this shared start in life, it took approximately 70 years for Eilean and Panerai's destinies to cross once again in an entirely unexpected location: the Caribbean island of Antigua, during the 2006 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Because of an accident from which she had never fully recovered, Eilean was languishing semi-abandoned in a mangrove swamp, having previously enjoyed a long and glorious career exploring the world's most fascinating seas in the hands of various devoted owners. Within moments of her sighting at Antigua, however, plans were taking shape to revive her fortunes. Once she had been purchased by Officine Panerai, Eilean was sent to the Cantiere Navale F. Del Carlo in Viareggio, where she underwent a painstaking restoration process that meticulously followed all of her original plans and employed the traditional working methods of the day.

At the end of 2009, Eilean was relaunched and since then, her sublimely elegant lines have represented the Officine Panerai at the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge regattas. She also regularly plays hosts to groups of disadvantaged or severely ill young people in collaboration with various nonprofit organisations, providing them with the opportunity to be A Captain For A Day, and enjoy the sea and the thrill of skippering a beautiful vintage yacht.

At just over 22 metres in length, Eilean has a Bermudan ketch rig. Two powerful mainsails are hoisted on her two masts. She is composite-built: her planking is Burmese teak over a galvanised iron frame. Clothed in elegantly sober lines, Eilean retains her wonderful authenticity, exuding a sense of effortless grace and refinement that marries effortlessly with the sleek functionality of her details.

PANERAI TRANSAT CLASSIQUE 2015

A spectacular epilogue to a season devoted entirely to passion for the sea, beauty and the glorious history of which all classic yachts are a part

The 10th season of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge concludes in September 2014 with Les Régates Royales de Cannes but the Panerai-sponsored classic sailing calendar also quickly brings an extra treat in the form of the latest edition of the Panerai Transat Classique 2015, which casts off on 7 January 2015. A spectacular epilogue to a season devoted entirely to passion for the sea, beauty and the glorious history of which all classic yachts are a part.

The fascinating volcanic Canary Island of Lanzarote and exotic Martinique in the Caribbean Lesser Antilles provide the departure and arrival ports for the Panerai Transat Classique 2015, the next edition of the renowned transatlantic race for classic and vintage yachts. The regatta begins from Lanzarote on 7 January 2015. Almost 3,000 nautical miles separate the two islands: an extraordinary and challenging Atlantic route along which dozens of Grandes Dames of the Sea will do heroic battle. The legendary race is once again being organised by the Atlantic Yacht Club of Paris in partnership with Officine Panerai.

The fleet will gather in Marina Lanzarote, the first port of call for yachts arriving into the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is a wellestablished European yachting destination and is also a popular choice for the world's leading racing sailors. The island offers an extensive, professional yachting infrastructure and Calero Marinas' newest facility is conveniently based in the island's capital with the international airport only minutes away and easy access to all the repair, maintenance and other services required by boats embarking on a transatlantic crossing.

The finish at Martinique will be a memorable experience indeed. Nicknamed “the Flower of the Caribbean”, Martinique is an astonishingly diverse island with beautiful mountains, the famous Mount Pelée volcano and even rainforest. Its stunning beaches are lapped by warm crystalline seas the temperature of which never falls below 25° C but are also kept pleasurably cool by a steady breeze. The Transat Panerai Classique 2015 finishes in one of the world's most beautiful bays which also plays host to the capital city of Fort-de-France.
