ZINZIN transforms scrap denim into fabulous fashion

Participating at the DSF's Market OTB, first-ever sustainable fashion and lifestyle market, ZINZIN brings forth its newest denim project that supports its eco-forward philosophy

Dubai, UAE – Most of the time, fashion is seen as frivolous. But, not when it sets out to help the environment. From its recycled wood walls and floors, and changing rooms fashioned from recycled cardboard tubes, ZINZIN helps make a style-forward social contribution to the eco-cause. To further in its cause of helping the environment, the independent non-mass fashion destination sets its eyes into transforming scrap denim into fabulous fashion.

The ZINZIN Denim Project was announced during its participation in the ongoing Market OTB (Outside the Box), a Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) event organized as the first-ever sustainable fashion and lifestyle market in the region. Joining the Market OTB, that runs from January 23 to February 2, 2014, ZINZIN has already put a stamp in its support of the use of refurbished shipping container to house its new collections of non-mass produced fashion brands.

Now, stepping further outside the ordinary, ZINZIN calls on the fashion students from reputable universities to turn the denim pieces and use their design capability to create a new fashion piece - tops, bottoms or full dresses – from these used denim materials.

According to Marianne Silloriquez, Brand Manager of ZINZIN, “We've always been a great supporter of recycling, and we've always put great emphasis on saving the environment. This is a fantastic opportunity for ZINZIN to give back to Mother Nature, and show our effort in raising awareness by using fashion as our main tool.”

The best items will be displayed and sold at the ZINZIN outlet at the Mercato Mall in Jumeirah Beach Road. Meanwhile, 100% of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to the ‘Give A Ghaf' tree planting program. Each piece will be sold at a base rate of AED 500, but due to the immense interest that the project has already generated amongst ZINZIN's clientele, the sales is likely to turn into an auction. A Ghaf tree will be named after the participant whose entry garners the highest bid.

Spearheaded by Goumbook, the ‘Give A Ghaf' initiative aims at promoting the conservation of the Wild Ghaf, a drought-tolerant evergreen tree indigenous to the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The Ghaf is considered as one of the region's most beloved natural treasures and was declared the UAE national tree a few years ago.

Tatiana Antonelli Abella, Managing Director of Goumbook, commented, “We are pleased with ZINZIN's vigorous effort in assisting our cause not only with sharing the proceeds of this project, but more through its amazing campaign of using the influential fashion industry in putting forward a strong statement of eco-forward philosophy. We look forward to the success of this collaboration, and we hope that it is just the beginning of something solid that will happen every year.”
