UAEREP's 13th Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Explores Malaysia's Sustainable Cloud Seeding Practices

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 30 October 2025 – The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) hosted the 13th session of its Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Series under the theme “The Sustainability of Weather Modification in Malaysia.”

The session was presented by Mohammad Redzuan bin Abdul Moin, Senior Assistant Director at the Atmospheric Science and Cloud Seeding Division of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia). Drawing on nearly two decades of experience in meteorology and atmospheric sciences, Redzuan shared insights into Malaysia's long-standing cloud seeding operations, which began in 1973. His presentation covered current practices, operational challenges, and future directions for weather modification in Malaysia.

His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said: “Through UAEREP, NCM continues to support pioneering research aimed at enhancing precipitation through innovative and sustainable approaches. The Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Series reflects this commitment by facilitating a global platform for knowledge-sharing, driving sustainable solutions, and strengthening resilience against climate-related risks. As global water challenges intensify, such efforts are essential to supporting climate adaptation and achieving long-term water security.”

For her part, Alya Al Mazrouei, Director of UAEREP, said: “We thank Mohammad Redzuan for his valuable contribution to this webinar session. His insights into Malaysia's experience in cloud seeding reflect the importance of regional expertise and long-term commitment to sustainable weather modification. At UAEREP, we are proud to facilitate these discussions as part of our continued efforts to advance the science and technology of rainfall enhancement through international collaboration.”

Redzuan explained that cloud seeding in Malaysia is primarily conducted to increase water levels in catchment areas and dams during dry seasons, and to mitigate issues related to local and transboundary haze. He highlighted the use of both wet and dry seeding techniques, supported by aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules, Skyvan SC-7, Cessna 340A, and Mi-17, in collaboration with national agencies including the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the Department of Environment (DOE), and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). He also discussed the importance of favorable weather conditions and sufficient resources for successful operations, and emphasized Malaysia's efforts to explore Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and regional cooperation through the ASEAN Weather Modification Centre.

The Rain Enhancement Hub Webinar Series serves as a global platform for experts, researchers, and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, explore emerging technologies, and raise awareness about the role of weather modification in addressing water scarcity and climate challenges.
