With the new year just around the corner, it's a great time to start planning those future holidays and coveted destinations. If you want to see the world, it's always a good idea to set aside a budget for flights, accommodation, and activities so that you can have the holiday of a lifetime in 2020.

Croatia

If you want to visit a country that has Mediterranean-living with a twist, then Croatia should be first on your list. Whether you visit the larger city of Dubrovnik or the smaller Roman towns such as Split, you won't be disappointed by the glittering seaside views. This country has dishes you won't have tried before but with an almost Italian and Spanish-style familiarity. Dalmatian hospitality and cuisine is not to be missed.

Kyoto

Many people know that visiting Japan is an expensive venture, and so if you're ready to book your flights, you want to get it right. Many people's first city to visit on their itinerary is Tokyo, which is still great fun in its futuristic neon vibrancy. However, Kyoto should not be missed off your list, as this is said to blend the modern sky-scraper aesthetic Japan is famous for with its older historical buildings and traditions.

Ibiza

Endless shallow waters and UNESCO World Heritage Sites make Ibiza an island that should absolutely be on your bucket list. You'll have enough history and relaxation to keep you occupied during your stay and rentals such as those at the lecollectionist.com are ideal for those who want to live the ultimate villa lifestyle while they're away.

Dubai

Dubai is the ultimate land of luxury, but it has so much more to offer than its shimmering skyscrapers. You can potter through its endless museums and monuments that pay tribute to Dubai's vibrant history. If you want retail therapy, but don't want to visit its plush shopping malls then traditional souks offer an authentic shopping experience.

Costa Rica

Vibrant and exotic wildlife, yoga on the beach, horsehides and adventure activities through acres of the jungle: Costa Rica can comfortably boast about having it all of late. This country has become the ultimate retreat destination in recent years, and that has been in part down to its recent ability to excel at luxurious experiences. It also has plenty to see in terms of heritage and natural sites, including a live volcano.

Rome

Sometimes, the ostensibly obvious options are the destinations we visit last. Rome is the home to some of the first historical facts we learn about, and it's well worth seeing it for your own eyes. Vatican City is just moments away, and so by visiting, you not only get to indulge in some of the world's finest cuisine but also some of its most beautiful architecture.

Whether you head for Asia, the Middle East or Europe, try not to avoid countries just because they seem somehow obvious. Visiting places you've never been that have plenty of sites to see will always be a worthwhile venture, wherever you go.
