The forum is being held in parallel to the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi
H.E. Eisa Saif Al Qubaisi: “The implementation of waste management plan is one of the main pillars of Abu Dhabi's national waste policy”
Abu Dhabi, 18 January 2017: Tadweer (Center of Waste Manage – Abu Dhabi) concluded today its Waste Management Solutions Forum, organized as part of EcoWASTE 2017 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. A significant number of key decision makers and experts in waste management and various municipalities from the Middle East and North Africa participated in the event.
During his opening speech, H.E. Eisa Saif Al Qubaisi, General Manager of Tadweer (Center of Waste Management-Abu Dhabi) said: “Tadweer has developed a master plan for integrated waste management that aims to reduce the waste that goes to landfills by 85%, through the development of diverse and integrated recycling strategies. This plan comes in line with the UAE vision, and part of Tadweer's strategic role in waste management services entailing the adoption of safe, efficient and economic practices across Abu Dhabi.”
“The implementation of this plan comes at the forefront of the Abu Dhabi's national waste policy main pillars. Several primarily objectives have been identified to develop this plan, covering the social and demographic aspects, rates of current and future waste generation, the legislative framework, infrastructure and the cost of development and different technological options for waste treatment,” added Al Qubaisi.
Various topics on waste management were discussed including;
- The Finnish waste management experience, strategies for successful waste management in the Middle East and North Africa and showcasing the municipalities plans and interests towards waste management in a more efficient way to maintain a sustainable environment and the private sector's role in supporting these strategies.
- Sustainable waste tyres management since unwanted tyres could be harmful for the environment especially that they're non-biodegradable. The topic of segregating waste at source has also been discussed to make the public aware of the importance of waste segregation. In addition to that, they set strategies on managing medical waste and getting rid of them in a safe and sustainable way.
- Turning used oil into a biofuel and discussed strategies for developing waste-to-energy since it is considered a clean technology for generating electricity, and strategies for reducing landfill waste, as well as the sustainable hotel waste and reducing construction and demolition strategies.
Al Qubaisi highlighted the importance of such forums in offering a great discussion and knowledge exchange platform with key decision makers and experts in waste management and various municipalities from the Middle East and North Africa. It also enables the exploration of different relevant solutions to maintain a healthy and sustainable environment.
EcoWASTE 2017 will be running alongside the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) and the International Water Summit (IWS) from 16 to 19 January at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
