Each McGill-UAE fellow will receive up to $52,500 (Canadian Dollars) each year to cover tuition and living expenses

Dubai, UAE, October 6, 2016:  McGill University, ranked No 1 in Canada and 30th globally, has launched the McGill-UAE Fellowships to be awarded to exceptional Master's and PhD students from the UAE to pursue advanced studies in any Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics discipline offered at McGill University. The fellowships are open to UAE nationals as well as expatriate residents.

The new fellowships were highlighted by Mr. Laurens Verkade, UAE Program Manager, McGill University, during a presentation on “Why pursue your graduate studies at McGill University” at Canadian University Dubai (CUD), attended by a number of interested students.

Describing the McGill UAE Fellowships as the most generous offered at the university, Mr. Verkade said that there was no application process and all UAE applicants offered admission to the university will automatically be considered for the fellowship.

Giving further details, he said each McGill-UAE fellow would receive an ample amount each year (up to $52,500 Canadian dollars) to cover tuition and living expenses.  This amount is renewable, to allow for up to two years for Master's students, and up to 4 years for PhD candidates. A travel allowance (as much as $5,000) will also be available each year for each student.

There will be additional support (up to $16,000) to participate in a one-time out-of-classroom, experiential learning opportunity: each student is eligible for a generous amount for activities such as industry internships, supervised field studies, collaboration with researchers, or working with mentors on entrepreneurial ventures.

Giving an overview of McGill University, Mr. Verkade said that apart from its excellent academic accomplishments, the university scored over many others because of its affordable cost of living, vibrant sprawling campus in downtown Montreal, postgraduate employment and safety. He also described the university among the most cosmopolitan, with a component of 24% international students, and 40% of students doing doctoral studies were international students.

Tracing the rich and outstanding history of McGill, Mr Verkade said the university was associated with 12 Nobel laureates, 3 Canadian Prime Ministers and 139 Rhodes scholars.
