National Geographic Abu Dhabi Moments Awards 2016 Exhibition introduces latest talent in Arab photography
  • Moments 2016 photography competition celebrated 'Food and the traditions of eating in the Arab World'
  • Almarai partnered for the fourth year in a row

Dubai, UAE, October 2, 2016:  National Geographic Abu Dhabi hosted an exhibition at The Empty Quarter DIFC to showcase the top Arab photography talent that participated in its sixth Moments competition. The exhibition celebrated the top three Moments 2016 competition award winning photographers and exhibited their compositions alongside a selection of other photographs from the top 50 shortlisted entries. The competition was organized in partnership with Al Marai, a strong supporter of the platform, for the fourth year in a row and was themed 'Food and the traditions of eating in the Arab World.'

The National Geographic Moments Awards supports budding photographers and is the largest regional platform for Arab photography talent. The Moments competition calls upon photographers from across the region to capture and inspire audiences through a single image based on a chosen theme and inspired moment. It encourages photographers to go beyond simply taking a photograph as they are urged to tell a story that tugs at the heart strings of audiences.

The Moments exhibition is aimed at supporting nascent photographers from across the region. It gives them an opportunity to display their best work and master their craft for a chance to catch the eye of not only their audiences but also potential clients that can help further their careers. The exhibition is a forum for National Geographic Abu Dhabi to showcase these talents from the Arab world and interact and engage, not only with the photographer community but media among other industries.

Sanjay Raina, General Manager of Fox Networks Group for the Middle East and North Africa, said: 'We are pleased to continue National Geographic's historic role as the top platform for great photography that crosses over from being just an assemblage of events into the realm of art. This year, the vast number of submissions brought into focus the rich and unique heritage of making and consuming food in the Arab world. They have not only captured food related moments of joy that we all can identify with but also provided glimpses of backstories that we can easily imagine. We aim to expand the Moments awards and exhibition platform alongside Almarai to a much larger scale in the coming years and continue to encourage talented Arab photographers to expect the unexpected and believe in their talent. The common objective is to continue to give them a platform where their art can be shared.'

Hussam Abdulqader, Head of Communications and PR, Almarai, said: “Almarai is happy to sponsor the Moments Award. Together with National Geographic, we created an environment for photographers of all levels from across the region to share their work. We continue to be committed to nurturing Arab talent in as many ways as possible. This association, now in its fourth year, grows from strength to strength and we are looking forward to see what the coming year will unfold. Congratulations to those who have participated.”

This year, the top three winners of National Geographic's Moments 2016 competition were Mohamed Benmokhtar of Morocco, Mohamed Albadaai from Oman and Mohamad Nasr from Egypt. Competition entrants were encouraged to submit their compositions shot with both traditional and innovative means of photography - this year the judges also welcomed images from smartphones and other technology. In keeping with the Moments 2016 theme, this year's competition entrants submitted compositions that captured the essence and joy of food - from purchasing produce in the local markets to cooking and eating.
