International Workshop brings together the leading nanotechnology and advanced materials experts

17 February 2016 – Ras Al Khaimah, UAE: From February 21-23 Ras Al Khaimah will play host once more to an elite group of scientists acknowledged as the top minds in their respective fields. They will be participating in IWAM-2016 (International Workshops on Advanced Materials). IWAM is organised and sponsored by the Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK-CAM) and this year's event will be the eighth in a series that stretches back to 2009.

RAK-CAM is chaired by Professor Tony Cheetham of the Department of Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, and has a Scientific Advisory Board that includes some stellar names in the world of advanced materials. RAK-CAM embraces materials science in its broadest sense, from well-known construction materials such as concrete and glass through to the sophisticated materials that underpin the operation of solar cells, catalytic converters, computers and cell phones.

It is anticipated that up to seven fellows of the prestigious Royal Society will be present at the workshops this year. Amongst the most renowned of them is Professor C.N.R. Rao, one of only 45 people to have been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award and celebrated for his work in solid-state and structural chemistry. Other speakers at the workshops include M.I.T. Professor Mildred Dresselhaus (“the Queen of Carbon Science”), Professor Michael Klein of Temple University, Professor Sir Richard Friend from Cambridge and Professor Sami El-Shall of Virginia Commonwealth University. In all over 140 researchers from 19 countries will participate in the workshops.

Professor Cheetham commented, “It has been an enormous privilege over the last 8 years to build the reputation of Ras Al Khaimah within the field of materials science. During this period, the number of UAE scientists attending the workshop has increased from just a handful in 2009 to nearly 60 in 2015.” Cheetham went on to note that during its lifetime IWAM has attracted more than 1,000 scientists to the UAE. The event is closely linked to the Sheikh Saqr Laboratory (SSL) which was established in Bangalore in 2013 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research under the instruction of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. SSL researchers will play a key part of this year's IWAM.

RAK-CAM's diversity of purpose is reflected in IWAM-2016's programme. There will be 21 invited talks by world leaders in advanced materials, addressing  research topics that have the potential for the greatest impact in developing clean and renewable forms of energy, nano medicine for improved diagnostics and therapy, and a clean healthy environment. There will also be 9 short talks by young PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. In addition, two poster sessions with 77 poster presentations are planned. The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) has played a much appreciated role in reviewing and selecting all poster abstracts.

It's anticipated by those attending that the synergistic effect of researchers with interests in diverse areas of advanced materials science coming together from around the globe will enhance scientific collaboration, taking the field a step closer to realizing its enormous potential for the betterment of mankind.
