Aster DM Healthcare hosts International Orthopaedic meet in Dubai, focusing on the next evolution in the field of orthopedics.

DUBAI- June 21, 2015: Emerging trends in the field of orthopedic treatment emphasize on patient specific solutions using the latest medical technologies to improve accuracy and decrease human errors to help patients get well soon. Several innovative concepts and smarter surgical techniques like robotic orthopedic surgeries provide quicker recovery times for patients, say experts.

Titled “An Orthopedic Update”, Aster DM Healthcare's fourth edition of Synerge International Medical Conference, held in Dubai recently, highlighted the next evolution in orthopedics --- robotics, computer-assisted surgeries, navigation devices and software for selection of the right implants which have already landed in the armaments of orthopedic surgeons globally. Aster Medcity-Kochi, the quaternary care hospital under Aster DM Healthcare in Kerala-India, offers the advanced robotic surgery by a specialized Minimal Access Robotic Surgery (MARS) team.

Presenting his paper at the Conference, Dr. Ranjith Narayan - Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery at Aster Hospital-Mankhool in Dubai, said: “Robotic surgery has opened up new avenues in the near future in surgical practice. As medicine and surgical techniques are evolving and still developing, we can see more of these advancements moving from research centers into the hands of doctors all over the world in the near future.”

“The most advanced surgery technique in the orthopedic filed ensures greater accuracy and produce consistent results.  Instead of using the surgery instruments by hand, robotic arms are used and controlled by efficient surgeons with the help of advanced computers. The procedure replicates the surgeon's exact movements on the master controls onto robotic instruments in the patient,” he added.

“The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved robotics are available for surgeons to perform advanced surgeries such as total hip and knee replacement in complex cases. There are several specific areas of the body, where the use of robot-assisted orthopedic surgery is more effective as the massive long bones associated with the joints are easy for robots to attach to. There are many advantages of robot-assisted orthopedic surgery. The robot can be securely attached to rigid bone structures, as the bone is a dense structure which is easy to be scanned by the robot. Bone can also be easily manipulated and fixed into position, and robot devices are capable of producing high energy forces needed for orthopedic surgery,” Dr. Narayan elaborated on.

The Aster Synerge Conference presented research discussions on the latest developments to enlighten the professionals on improving their surgical and therapeutic skills. A panel of globally-renowned experts delivered lectures on various orthopaedic-related topics as well as rare and special surgical procedures.

The topics presented at the Conference include ‘An evidence-based approach for neck pain and disc disease', ‘Low back ache-the surgical solution' and ‘Femoral shaft fractures in children', ‘An update on Osteoarthritis', ‘Ankle injuries and its modality of treatment', ‘Evolution of ACL reconstruction', ‘Decision-making in anterior chronic shoulder instability' and ‘Principles of mobile bearing unicondylar knee arthroplasty', and ‘New trends in management of bone tumour'.

These topics were presented respectively by Dr. Nicandro Figueiredo (Specialist Neurosurgeon – Medcare Orthopedics and Spine Hospital), Dr. Alexis Dominic Xaviour (Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon – Aster Hospital Mankhool), Dr. Vijay Mohan (Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon – Aster Medcity Kochi), Dr. Prem James Charles (Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon – Aster Medical Centre Dubai), Dr. Pangal Shripathi Rao (Specialist Arthroscopic Surgeon - Medcare Orthopedics and Spine Hospital), Dr. Ranjith Narayan (Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon – Aster Hospital Mankhool), Dr. Subin Sugath (Consultant Orthopedic Onco-surgeon - Aster Medcity Kochi).

Presenting his paper Dr Subin Sugath, Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon at Aster Medcity-Kochi, said, “Bone tumors are rare forming less than two per cent of all malignancies. Primary bone tumors commonly affect children in their second decade, while secondary bone tumors commonly affect the elderly. Giant cell tumor which is a benign but locally aggressive tumor commonly affects patients in the third and fourth decade with a female preponderance. Malignant bone tumors have the characteristic of spreading to other parts of the body, the lungs and other bones being the commonest sites. The most important step in managing a bone tumor is reaching a correct diagnosis before starting treatment.”

Discussing about Cervical Disc Disease (CDD), Dr. Nicandro Figueiredo, Spinal Neurosurgeon at MOSH, said, “Around 60 per cent of adults experience significant neck and related arm pain during lifetime, and it is the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in individuals aged above 55 years. For most patients, the signs and symptoms will resolve spontaneously over a variable length of time. Evidence-based guidelines are very important to guide the clinicians for the proper management of CDD, and the surgery results in better outcomes than medical or interventional treatment.”

Dr. Pangal Shripathi Rao, Specialist Arthroscopic Surgeon at MOSH, said, “There is a high prevalence of knee ligament (Or tissue) injuries in young people in Dubai, especially among football players. Such injuries need to be diagnosed early and the ligament should be reconstructed early.

Minimally invasive surgical procedure on joint for reconstruction of this ligament is a safe, efficient, speedy and convenient method of treatment. This is cosmetically superior and permits early mobilization with minimal pain.”

The event was attended by Ms. Alisha Moopen, Director of Corporate Strategies - Aster DM Healthcare. Dr PMM Sayed - Group Medical Director, and medical specialists and industry professionals in Dubai.

Commenting on the ‘Synerge' International Conference, Ms. Alisha Moopen, Director of Corporate Strategies – Aster DM Healthcare, said: “Aster DM Healthcare is an all-encompassing healthcare provider, offering care across specializations from primary to tertiary in the region and beyond. As a pioneer in the industry, we have created this highly successful platform to bring together renowned industry experts to convene and delve deep into specialized areas of medicine. We believe this is an extremely important step to discover and share new techniques and breakthroughs in medicine with doctors and community at large.”

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) accredited the Conference as being worth 4.5 Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours for the attendees. ‘Synerge' has been conducting accredited CME programs and clinical interactions for over a decade. ‘Synerge' will come up with more forums for sharing expertise and updates on various clinical subjects among the medical community, benefitting the society in due course.

Under the ‘Synerge' platform, Aster DM Health has lined up another three CMEs to be conducted before March 2016. International experts, along with experts within Aster network, would join the Conferences to share their knowledge on the latest trends in various super specialties.
