    Carnegie Mellon Qatar Student Wins MENA Portfolio Management Competition

    January 03, 2022:  Daisy Ru, a student at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation partner university, has won the Refinitiv Portfolio Management Competition, Middle East and Africa edition. The competition included competitors from 17 universities in seven countries. The competition challenged students to build a portfolio of S&P 500 companies and manage it over several weeks.     WCM-Q Neuromusicology Research Reveals Secrets of Human Creativity

    Doha – December 29, 2021: Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have explored the cognitive and neural basis of human creativity by monitoring the brain activity of a musician improvising on the ney, or Arabic flute. The research has been published in Frontiers in Psychology, a leading journal, and is the first scientific study of the neuromusicology of Middle Eastern music. Led by Dr. Ghizlane Bendriss, PhD of Neuroscience and Assistant Professor of Biology, the team of researchers used a wireless electroencephalographic (EEG) headset to record the brainwaves of a musician as he played a total of 24 improvisations at low, medium and high tempos on the ney.     Mohammed Al-Qassabi invented a detection system for offsides, performance issues and injuries in football matches December 14, 2021:  A student from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation partner university, placed in the top five at Challenge and Innovation Forum Qatar 2021. Mohammed Al-Qassabi was recognized for his invention of a detection system for football matches that detects offside plays, as well as performance and injury issues.     WCM-Q Student Researchers Highlight the Effects of Flavonoids on COVID-19

    Doha – November 22, 2021:  Student researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) contributed to a study investigating the potential of flavonoids found in plants for fighting viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.  Under the guidance of WCM-Q mentors, medical students Ridhima Kaul and Pradipta Paul conducted a systematic review of 27 existing research papers to determine the effectiveness of 69 different flavonoids against various SARS-CoV-2 drug targets, including ‘3C-like protease’, an enzyme with a key role in replication of the virus.  The study, which is published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, found that several flavonoids showed promising antiviral properties, including quercetin (found in onions, apples, berries and green tea), ......read more
