American takes win from break into Bergamo
UAE Team Emirates continued to build on what is fast becoming a very memorable Giro d'Italia with Brandon McNulty taking an exciting victory on stage 15 from Seregno to Bergamo (195km).
The 24 year old entered the main break of the day which built a maximum gap of seven minutes over the peloton. As the breakaway was whittled down, McNulty played his cards well to find himself alone out-front with Ben Healy (EF Education) and Marco Frigo (Israel Premier Tech) for company.
McNulty was able to respond to all the attacks thrown at him by Healy and timed his sprint to perfection on the downhill road to Bergamo to take the 27th win of the season for UAE Team Emirates.
McNulty : “It's an indescribable feeling. It was my big goal coming here to take a stage. On the last climb I went on the attack but Ben Healy countered it hard and I thought my race was done. I managed to fight back and in the end it came down to the last kick and the sprint and I just went for it. We came here for GC and the goal of me going for a stage win so now it's in the bag we can fully focus on the GC.”
Joao Almeida held his place in 4th on GC behind race leader Bruno Admirail (Groupama-FDJ) ahead of the rest-day tomorrow. The Portuguese rider continues to lead the white jersey classification.
On Tuesday, the Giro continues with a high-mountain stage from Bra to Rivoli (179km).
