As temperatures soar, Kenneth Loining, stylist for THE One, gives us his take on how to bring that outdoor feeling indoors with glorious green -- the colour to give your home a sizzling summer makeover
This season it's all about lush living as THE One tips gorgeous green as the "new black." Refreshing and calming, green is the colour of stability and healing, and can be used in various shades to produce different effects. Think nature: lively lime, soft sage, moss and dark leafy greens combined with wood sculptures, bouquets of twigs, cool chrome, slick marble and clear glass. Co-ordinate these with your favourite complementary colours from the summer palette for three very different looks!
Luminous lime as a backdrop gives you the green light for some seriously stylish yet fun and flirty home decoration. Create a personal playground of colour, opulence and pleasure by blending "Rock Candy" hues of bright girly greens, pink, purple, lilac, white and grey for a youthful and inspiring summer setting.
Make a striking living room statement by contrasting the luxurious cool purple velvet sofa with a monochrome marble coffee table and pure white Satya Paul designer rug. Accessorise with cushions in zesty lime green, pretty pink vases, vintage-inspired etched glass and a vibrant multicoloured throw. To enhance the lush look, introduce a couple of "forever-flourishing" topiary trees draped with glitzy crystal diamantè garlands. Diamonds are, after all, a girlís best friend! Top it off with a fabulously feminine floral Zahra pendant lamp in delicate porcelain, for some playful enlightenment.
For a casual yet "ubercool" eating experience, treat your family and friends to a taste of alfresco dining with flat wicker Mistral chairs and a lawn table dressed to the nines in sterling silver and crystal. Add some wind-proof ambience with candle jars and ornate Ojasvi lanterns, which are sure to steal the limelight.
If you're more guru than girly, the "Zen Garden" trend is made for you. Create a soothing sanctuary with a mature colour palette of dusky greens (think hues of olive, moss and emerald), rich dark browns and black with subtle grey and calming cream accents. Here, simple, clean-lined furniture with props in glossy gold and dramatic black will produce a classic yet contemporary effect.
Get the Zen lounge look by pairing the square lines of the brown Guru sofa and Asian-inspired dark wood Amanpuri coffee table with the round shape of a Flex floor lamp in gleaming gold or raven black. Add a Far Eastern flavour with bonsai trees, oriental lanterns and ornaments in cream. Accessorising with emerald green cushions, black candle stands and chunky beaded pillar candles will enhance the meditative mood.
Turn your bedroom into a dreamy haven by layering the jet black Liza bed in a mix of dark green and ivory bedding and give the room a golden glow with some Jin table lamps. While you're at it, why not also go "green" in your bath routine with the latest in eco-friendly luxury towelling? Check out THE One's new, silky soft Bamboo and Organic ranges.
Another huge trend this summer is the "City Safari" look, perfect for down-to-earth city slickers who are secretly bush babies at heart. Invite nature into your home and create a modern urban retreat by going for an "au naturel" colour palette of foliage-inspired serene greens, white, brown, beige and touches of silver. Contrast simple, up-to-date furniture with raw materials to evoke emotions only Mother Nature can arouse and inject a mixture of woods, clear glass and macho metallics for a contemporary twist.
Bring this style to life in your living room with the brown Anki sofa and oak-topped Maria coffee table. Soften things up with a fluffy brown rug and cushion covers in beige and cream. If you long for the wide-open plains of Africa, conjure up the illusion of space with a trio of rustic Branch mirrors. Make a feature of an organic wooden sculpture and accessorise with bundles of twigs and branches. As a final flourish, add a lively green accent in the form of a Bamboo tree.
The Safari adventure continues in the bedroom where the solid oak Maxima bed and side tables take centre stage, complemented by a glass and stainless steel bookcase. While crisp white or classic cream is the natural choice in colonial bedding, why not go a little wild and finish off with a faux fur Leopard bedspread? Meow!
Whichever of THE One's lush living trends you go for this summer, it's bound to turn your neighbours green with envy.
