Perfect beaches, clear warm seas and luxury aplenty – it's no wonder the Maldives is the ultimate A-list destination
There's definitely something about the Maldives that induces a sense of calm; perhaps it's the gentle lapping of the waves, the soft breezes or the sheer indulgence of being free to do absolutely nothing but relax. With an enviable climate, crystal clear azure lagoons, idyllic palm-fringed islands and some of the world's best diving, the Maldives has it all. It's no surprise that year after year celebrities flock to the various resorts sprinkled across the 1,200 coral-fringed islets that make up this Indian Ocean paradise.
Fortunately for the jet set, the privacy these gorgeous islands offer allows them to take a break from being in the public eye while avoiding the dreaded paparazzi zoom lens! Madonna is a seasoned Maldives fan, most recently taking toyboy Jesus Luz as her travel companion. She also vacationed there with ex-hubby Guy Ritchie while trying to save their marriage. Beyonce and Jay-Z toured the islands on a private yacht together, and Naomi Campbell has holidayed there with fellow fashionista Stefano Gabbana.
The romantic vibe of the Maldives has made it the go-to destination for honeymooners and, when Hollywood stars tie the knot, a suitably glam honeymoon in the islands is increasingly becoming de rigueur. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes spent a week cruising around the Maldives on a friend's yacht after their wedding, and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie and her actor husband Josh Duhamel honeymooned here earlier this year – though the couple apparently barely left their villa, instead opting for private dinners on their terrace.
At Angsana Velavaru, OK! Middle East followed Fergie's lead and barely left our beach villa. The cosy terrace is on its own stretch of beach, and the unspoilt view across the ocean made it an ideal location for private candlelit dinners. Each villa also comes equipped with a Jacuzzi in a private outdoor terrace – perfect for gazing up at the stars – as well as an outdoor shower. The signature Angsana treatment at the resort's recently-opened spa uses euphoria oil, extracts from ylang ylang and Sweet Basil, meant to induce deep relaxation, relieve tension and aid blood circulation. After an hour of being expertly pummelled in the outdoor treatment area while listening to the languid sound of the surf, we were feeling completely and utterly blissed-out, and not at all looking forward to getting back to the daily grind of Dubai!
Daily snorkelling trips to the reefs surrounding the islands offer holidaymakers the chance to view an abundance of exotic underwater life. OK! Middle East spotted stingrays basking in the shallows of our private beach and a group of baby sharks swimming in a nearby lagoon!
