Tunes from globe to set DSF tone


IT IS believed that no festival would be complete without music. Thus it is quite natural if music lovers expect a series of concerts during the Dubai Shopping Festival 2009.

Realising people's aspirations, organisers of the annual festival have geared up to feature some of the best names in the industry. The series of music concerts planned for this DSF will bring together some fine talent from across the globe.

Among those scheduled to perform during the 32-day festival are Zakir Hussain, Tamer Hosny, Fatboy Slim, Iron Maiden, Shaggy, Pankaj Udhas, and Ghulam Ali. Additionally, featured are theatre shows, comedy shows, and the renowned musical The Woman in Black.

The series of musical concerts would begin with live performance by renowned Egyptian singer, actor and composer Tamer Hosny, who will perform live on Jan.16 at Dubai Festival City. Known for his melodies and his range of songs, Tamer Hosny has carved for himself a reputation as being one of the most versatile Arab singers today.

The lovers of Urdu and Hindi poetry would also have the opportunity to regale this festival. The Indian Republic Day Kavi Sammelan and Mushaira, will be held on Jan.29 at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium of The Indian High School, Dubai. The annual event would feature renowned Hindi and Urdu poets from India and resident poets in the UAE.

Those who love musical rendition of ghazals would have to wait for a week as ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali is set to take centrestage on Feb.6. Admired as the finest Ghazal singer ever, Ghulam Ali will perform live at Crystal Ballroom of Hyatt Regency, Dubai.

Ghazal lovers would have another opportunity on Feb.15 as eminent Ghazal singer from India Pankaj Udhas will perform at the same venue. A legend in his own right, Pankaj Udhas is famous for selection of easy lyrics and a soft tone. His most famous rendition is probably Chitthi aai hai which propelled him to instant fame.

Zakir Hussain is another eminent Indian artiste who is scheduled to enthral audience during the festival. An international artiste by all means, Zakir Hussain is the face of Indian rhythm across the world. He would regale his admirers in Dubai once again by performing live on Jan.30 at Tennis Stadium, Dubai Aviation Club.

Those who are looking for internationally acclaimed stage plays would get their share as well, as The Woman in Black is scheduled to be staged daily from Jan.28 to Feb.6 at the Madinat Theatre, Madinat Souk Jumeirah, Dubai. Now in its 20th terrifying year in London's West End, this groundbreaking play has been seen by over three million people. This fantastic new production features a quality cast of West End actors.

Boombastic Beats ­ Shaggy 'Live in Concert' would feature Grammy winning recording artist Shaggy to the Dubai audience on Feb.12 at the Dubai Festival City. After one decade, six albums, two of them multi-platinums, five number one hits, and 11 top ten singles worldwide, Shaggy is still on the grind.

Iron Maiden ­ Live in Concert would be yet another occasion to wait for. To be held on Feb.13 at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, the concert would feature one of the greatest heavy metal bands that have been formed. Iron Maiden has thrilled fans for more than two decades now. The group's flamboyant stage settings and electric performances have made them popular across the world.
