51. Sun Protection 28/11/2000
In sunny climates as the UAE, screening against the sun is essential for skin protection. Most sunscreen lotions mention their protection degree as SPF (Sun Protection Factor). The higher the SPF, the stronger the protection of the sunscreen. The desired SPF varies with different factors such as the skin tone of the person, amount of time he/she is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet radiation, reflections, altitude, wind and the angle of the sun. The safest approach is for everybody to wear at least 15SPF, even on a cloudy day.

Alcohol can be dangerous when combined with other drugs especially sleeping pills. Sometimes combined effect even with a common cold remedy like Actifed might lead to slowing down of breathing as well as heart. Such combinations can be fatal at times.

Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem, but a health hazard. A Body Mass Index (BMI) can be derived from height and weight. A BMI of 21-25 kg/metre square is an ideal weight for individuals. To loose weight, you must chose a weight loss plan that makes sense for you and is user friendly. Concentrate on adequate physical activity and make sure you maintain a daily food and activity chart.

The commonest cause of Constipation is not eating foods containing fibre such as bran, wholemeal bread, fruit and vegetables. You must make an extra effort to go to the toilet regularly and at fixed times or the problem will get worse. One must all drink plenty of water and include high fibre content food in your diet. Strong laxatives is not recommended without medical advice.
55. Allergic Reaction 21/10/2000

For rashes or hives from an allergic reaction, take a cool shower or bath (avoid hot water), and apply cool compress to the skin to relieve itching and discomfort. Rest and cut down on physical activities until the symptoms have gone and check with your doctor before taking any medication.

56. Animal Bites 19/10/2000

Animal Bites can lead to wound infection. Such an infection is caused by the many organisms found in animal saliva. Basic First Aid can be carried out in the house before you get professional medical help. Wash the wound with soap and fast running water for several minutes. Place sterile dressing or clean cloth on the wound. You must also make sure that you show all tissue (bitten off) with the wound to the doctor.

57. Gastroenteritis 17/10/2000

Vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps are the commonest manifestations of gastroenteritis. Get plenty of rest, do not eat or drink anything until the vomiting has stopped. Drink lemon water with salt and sugar added, one sip at a time. Avoid dairy products, fruits, vegetables, bran, fried and spicy food and alcohol. Over the next 24 hours, eat bland foods like cooked cereals, rice, soup, bread, crackers, baked potatoes and eggs.

58. Antibiotics 16/10/2000

For Antibiotics to work and cure, they must be taken properly i.e. prescribed dose at the correct time. The course must be finished as well. We should avoid taking antibiotics or our bodies will get immune to it and antibiotic resistance will occur. This means that antibiotics will slowly stop being effective at fighting infections.
