DVDs - The Waiting is Over |
DVDs or VCRs – a number of us are still at crosswords, much to the bewilderment of die-hard Technophiles. Fence-sitters like us had better make our move because the digital leap is taking place all around us and the sheer improvement in overall viewing quality cannot be scoffed at. DVDs offer “fun not possible with a VCR” says our expert, Ranjan and the evidence is quite clear for all to see. Better picture, better sound and a variety of special features, such as director's commentaries, documentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes, explanations of how special effects were achieved…
Now don't just run to the store to purchase your DVD. Ask the expert.
Does the DVD player make all that much of a difference - can't I just be happy with my VCR?
Yes, lots of people are happy with their VCR's. But it's the difference between a tape and a CD. The picture and sound are much better. Also you can pick up at almost any section and also in many cases enlarge the image, view it at different speeds etc - fun not possible with a video tape!
What is the price range we are looking at currently in the UAE market?
Between Dh.550 to Dh 800 for regular models. Between Dhs. 750 to Dhs.
1150 for those with AC3 decoders. (1UD$ = 3.67 Dhs approx.)
Would you say the DVD is a developing technology and that we should
wait a year or two for technology and prices to stabilise?
Prices have already crashed over the last year. The cost of a comparable DVD now is 60% of what it was last year. The technology can always change, ie. DVD-RAM /DVD-R is now available. But these are still expensive. It depends on whether you want to enjoy now or never, since new technologies will keep you from the purchase at any time!
What should my television have to be DVD compatible?
All televisions will give a better picture with a DVD. Flat TV's will be better especially if they support DVD component inputs. If you have a bigger budget, digital TV's are available.
What is an AV output, S-video output and progressive scan-output?
AV output is the standard AV jack used on almost all electronics. S-Video is better than the composite video connection but not as good as the component video connection now available on DVD's. Technically in S-Video the luminance (Y)(black & white) and chrominance (C) (color) signals separate to take advantage of high resolution sources as DVD, S-VHS etc. Progressive scanning is common to digital TV's.
Would you purchase a DVD player that also plays music CDs?
All of them play CD's.
The DVD players that are available here (in the UAE) - are they region-specific?
Yes, they are region code specific. However, you can check prior to purchase. Middle East and Europe are part of Region 2. Sometimes all-region DVDs are available in the market in some countries.
