TGT journalist wins Filipino award


The Gulf Today's senior reporter Mariecar Jara-Puyod was among six prominent Filipinas who were honoured with Women of Substance 2009 Award at a dazzling ceremony held in the Montgomerie Golf Club, Dubai.

The awards were announced by Illustrado, a monthly magazine for international Filipinos, for achievers in different fields.

The other women named were Engineer Mary Jane Alvero Al Mahdi, Isabelita Warren, Lilian Vargas, Juliet Solas and Clarita de Quiroz Craig.

Lalaine Chu-Benitez, Editor-in-Chief and organiser of Illustrado's Women of Substance 2009, said that this is second consecutive year they are awarding prominent Filipinas to recognise their achievements in the society.

"They show us that we can be significant and make a mark someday, despite our ordinary existence today," she said.

She introduced all six winners to the gathering and shared their views with the audience who showed great enthusiasm in their individual success stories.

Mariecar Jara-Puyod is also president of the Filipino Press Club in the UAE. In her award acceptance speech, she said: "I prefer the newspaper industry because I like to move around, meet people, talk and discuss issues with them, and learn from them."

Engineer Mary Jane Alvero Al Mahdi, a chemical engineering graduate and leading a businesswoman related to chemical labs, said that her failures had given motivation and led her successful throughout her career. Lilian Vargas is the Manager of Customer Service and Shop Floor Administration at Dubai Duty Free.

The other winners including Isabelita Warren, a dynamic entrepreneur and community philanthropist; Juliet Solas awarded healthcare professional and Clarita de Quiroz Craig, a renowned model, also shared their views with the audience.

Mariecar got her first journalism award in 1998 when she was bestowed the bronze at the first Australian-New Zealand Chambers of Commerce and Industries in the Philippines Journalism awards.
