    WMO and IATA Agree to Improve Aircraft Meteorological Reporting

    United Arab Emirates -  October 28, 2020:  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and World Meteorological Organization have signed an agreement to increase and improve the automated reporting of meteorological data by commercial aircraft. The new initiative, called the WMO and IATA Collaborative AMDAR Programme (WICAP), aims to expand the existing WMO Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR) system to ensure coverage over data-sparse areas.     Airlines Unable to Cut Costs Deep Enough to Save Jobs

    IATA Revises 2020 Passenger Traffic Forecast Down for the Middle East

    United Arab Emirates,  October 22, 2020:  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed the recent overflight agreement between the Kingdom of Jordan and State of Israel that allows for flights to cross over both countries’ airspace. The agreement paves the way for commercial airlines to be able to fly through the Israel-Jordan corridor—which will shorten flight times, reducing fuel burn and CO2 emissions.  Airlines have historically flown around Israel when flying east / west operating over Middle East airspace.     IATA Welcomes US Military Report on Low Risk of Catching COVID-19 on a Flight

    United Arab Emirates,  October 18, 2020:   The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed the release of the results of testing by the United States Transportation Command (US Transcom) confirming the low risk of COVID-19 transmission onboard an aircraft. The US Transcom testing, which was conducted in August, found that “the overall exposure risk from aerosolized pathogens, like coronavirus, is very low” on the types of airline aircraft typically contracted to move Department of Defense (DOD) personnel and their families, US Transcom stated.     Looming Cash Crisis Threatens Airlines

    United Arab Emirates,  October 07, 2020:  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned that the airline industry will burn through $77 billion in cash during the second half of 2020 (almost $13 billion/month or $300,000 per minute), despite the restart of operations. The slow recovery in air travel will see the airline industry continuing to burn through cash at an average rate of $5 to $6 billion per month in 2021. IATA called on governments to support the industry during the coming winter season with additional relief measures, including financial aid that does not add more debt to the industry’s already-highly-indebted balance sheet.     AURAK Satellite Ground Station Successfully Received the First Decoded Signal from "MeznSat"

    United Arab Emirates,  September 30, 2020:  The satellite ground station of the American University in Ras Al-Khaimah (AURAK) dedicated to track and communicate with the “MeznSat” satellite, has successfully received the first decoded signal from the satellite, which was successfully launched yesterday afternoon from Russia. The ground station at the university campus was designed by AURAK students to track the satellite, receive data from it and send commands, has received the first signal from “MeznSat” while it was passing in the airspace of United Arab Emirates at exactly 1:41 AM, local time (29th Sept 2020).     Insufficient Capacity Dampens Air Cargo in August

    United Arab Emirates,  September 30, 2020:  The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air freight markets in August showing that improvement remains slow amid insufficient capacity. Demand moved slightly in a positive direction month-on-month; however, levels remain depressed compared to 2019. Improvement continues at a slower pace than some of the traditional leading indicators would suggest. This is due to the capacity constraint from the loss of available belly cargo space as passenger aircraft remain parked.     • Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), was 12.6% below previous-year levels in August (-14% for international operations).
