Living in a hot country is often difficult. There are unique challenges associated with extreme heat and most people struggle when daytime temperatures are in the high 30s. Homes and workplaces usually have air-con systems to make life more comfortable for residents, but once you head outside, the heat will hit you like a sledgehammer.

Life in Dubai is wonderful for many reasons, but if you are not accustomed to extreme heat – as is often the case for expats moving to the country – here are some tips to help you survive.

Water

Dehydration occurs quickly in a hot climate. It is important to drink plenty of water, as water helps your body stay cool. Carry a bottle of cool water everywhere you go and sip it throughout the day. Try to avoid drinking alcohol, as this will dehydrate you further. Caffeine is also best avoided, as this increases the metabolism and makes us feel warmer.

Mad Dogs and Englishmen

As the saying goes, only Mad Dogs and Englishmen brave the midday sun. Temperatures peak at midday, so if possible, stay out of the sun between 11 AM and 2 PM. Take a siesta or rest somewhere cool and air-conditioned.

Salt

We sweat a lot in hot weather, which causes us to lose salt. It is important that you consume enough salt in a hot climate. Electrolyte imbalances occur when the body is lacking essential salts. If you are sweating copious amounts, drink some coca cola or eat salty snacks.

Don't Rush

Don't run when you can walk. Rushing around all day long is guaranteed to make you feel hot and sweaty. Take your time getting from A to B and whatever you do, avoid exercise during the day. If you do feel the need to go for a run, head out early in the morning when it's slightly cooler.

Keep Your Home Cool

Contrary to what you might think, it is better not to spend all your time in an air-conditioned building. Your body needs time to adjust to the heat, so only use air-conditioning for the bedroom or short bursts at other times of the day. Keep blinds drawn and shutters down during the day, as this will help to keep your home cool. If the air-con isn't working properly and you are having problems sleeping, call an AC maintenance Dubai company to fix it.

Wear Loose Clothing

Tight-fitting clothing is a no-no in a hot climate. Wear loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton and linen. Natural fibers wick sweat away from the skin and help your body breathe. Carry a small cotton napkin to wipe sweat away from your neck and face.

Think about Snow

This one sounds crazy, but it really does work. Next time you feel too hot, close your eyes and imagine you are lying in the snow. Experts have found that thinking about cold things reduces body temperature, so stick pictures of snowmen on your bedroom wall and think about your last skiing vacation before you fall asleep.
