Conserve Water

In the Bathroom
In the Kitchen
Outside around your home

Every drop saved per second can amount to 200 gallons per month or 2400 gallons per year. In the UAE almost all our tap water comes through the expensive process of desalination. The Emirates Environmental Group gives us some tips on conserving this valuable resource. Help us conserve water so that our future generations won't go thirsty!

In the Bathroom
  1. Take a five minute shower instead of a bath (Amount saved: 15 gallons per shower).
  2. Don't use toilets as a wastebasket, flush only when you need to. A dual flush toilet system can be fitted which discharges smaller volumes of water for liquid waste and large volume for solid waste. Better still, place a plastic bottle full of water in the flush system - it will reduce the amount of water flushed by half (Amount saved : 12 or more gallons per day).
  3. When brushing teeth, use a glassful of water instead of running the tap (Amount saved: 3 or more gallons per brushing).
  4. When taking a bath, don't run the water without closing the drain first. The warm water that comes after running the tap for a while will take care of that first cold burst of water.
  5. Do not let water run when it is not actively being used for showering, shaving, brushing teeth or washing hands.
  6. Low flow showerheads can be fitted to maximise water coverage and minimize water volume.

In the Kitchen
  1. When washing dishes by hand, fill up the sink with soap and water instead of running the water the whole time. (Amount saved: 25 gallons per load)
  2. Use full load when using your washing machine or dishwasher. Use detergents that contain no phosphates and work well in cold water.
  3. Check for leaks and dripping taps. A dripping tap is equivalent to 10 deep bathfuls of water per month.
  4. Fit water conserving devices: spray taps or tap aerators are an alternative to steady flow taps enabling a smaller volume of water to achieve the same effect.
  5. When you want a drink instead of running the tap until the water-cools, keep a pitcher in the refrigerator (Amount saved : 2 gallons per drink)
  6. Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, not under running tap water (Amount saved : 5 or more gallons per meal)

Outside around your home
  1. Water your lawn during the early morning or late evening hours when there are low temperatures and low winds. This reduces the amount of water you lose from evaporation.
  2. Position your sprinklers to water only the lawn, not the sidewalk or street.
  3. Don't waste water hosing down your driveway or sidewalk. (Amount saved: 25 gallons every five minutes not using hose)
  4. Drive your car over your lawn (if you have one) to save watering it, or use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
  5. If washing a car at home, use a bucket of water instead of the hosepipe .
  6. Don't over water your lawn during the winter, as a general rule it only needs to be watered every 2-3 days during this time.
