Schools take up the Green Initiative

Green Bookmarks
Kids for Conservation
A 'Whale' of a play
Cycling for a Cause

As the need for conservation and preservation of the environment gains momentum in the UAE, school children are doing their bit to save mother earth from destruction. If your school is doing something special, GoDubai would love to hear about it! (In picture - The students of Rashid School for Boys - cycling for a cause)

Green Bookmarks
The children of the Arab Unity School came up with a brilliant idea - they have designed, printed and written a limited number of creative and meaningful slogans on bookmarks and presented it to the EEG to raise funds for future projects. Some of the messages on the bookmarks read : "Don't Let our Planet Wither & Die", "Celebrate Everyday as Earth Day", "Save The Earth - Stop Pollution", "Save The Mother Nature & It Will Save You", "Recycle & Re-use Cans, Before it Reduces The Resources".

A 'Whale' of a play
The Rashid School for Boys presented the Play 'Whale' in November, written by David Holman. It was the first play to be held at the school in many years and provided a unique experience for children to learn about the whales and appreciate nature. Over a hundred students were involved in all aspects of the play from acting to set design and from front of house to lights. The "Whale" is the story of the grey whales which live in the Pacific Ocean and breed in the Baja Lagoons of Mexico. Every spring they swim north along the coast of North America to feed in the teeming seas between Alaska and Russia. That round trip is a swim of almost twenty thousand kilometres. Each autumn these whales swim south, back to Baja to escape the Alaskan winter, as it becomes freezing cold. As the ocean turns to ice, whales get trapped in shrinking remanants of open water and die. The play revolves round this story.

Cycling for a Cause
Four boys from Rashid School held an hour-long bicycling event in the school and managed to get sponsorships for the laps. They successfully collected seven hundred and seventy five dirhams which was later donated to the Emirates Environment Group. One of the students, Saud Hareb, did 22 laps and got 9 people to sponsor him.

Kids for Conservation
Two environmental clubs at the American School Dubai - Kids for Conservation and Kids For Saving The Earth, have been collecting aluminium cans and classroom wastepaper for recycling for a long time. In order to collect aluminium cans, special recycling barrels have been placed in strategic locations throughout the ASD campus as well as in the elementary and secondary staff rooms. The ASD has also been participating in the EEG's Annual Can Collection Campaign and has stood third each time. In the past, it was necessary for club memebers to collect the cans and store them in a large bin so that they may be picked up by a recycling company, but this year a new collection system is being arranged by the EEG, whereby a new company by the name of Clean Earth, will not only pick up the cans but also carry it to the recycling centres.
